TextWrangler 2.0 is now Free

For years, BBEdit Lite from Bare Bones Software was the premiere "free" text editor on the Mac. It was based on their award-winning, full-featured product BBEdit, but lacked some of the finer features such as syntax support for several programming languages. Bare Bones stopped supporting BBEdit Lite some time ago, but has still provided version 6.1 as a free download.

There's a new champion! Bare Bones has decided to make TextWrangler, their low-end text editor (which previously sold for $49) FREE. Why would they do this? You can read the FAQ here.

TextWrangler is much more than a re-packaged BBEdit Lite. I was stunned when I launched it for the first time, and saw a more advanced editor than the version of full BBEdit I use every day (Okay, I'm still running 6.5). TextWrangler 2.0 provides language support, integrated FTP server access, a documents drawer, and more. It still is not even close to having the toolset provided by BBEdit 8.0, but the price is right.

Check out a comparison chart between TextWrangler 2.0 and BBEdit 8.0 here. One gotcha for older Mac users-- TextWrangler requires Mac OS 10.3.5... so if you are running an older version of the Mac OS, you better try BBEDIT Lite instead.

Download TextWrangler today.
